Kalimudan, the beginning!

Kuya Romy would often admonishes that art as an agent of social change will always be the challenge for serious artists because they want to affirm the vital role of art in society and social transformation and its part in the making of history towards a human and just order which eludes our grasp at present.
Kalimudan Culture & Arts Center was a brainchild of Romeo Narvaez, artistic director of the prominent drama group in Gensan, the Mindanao State University Kabpapagariya Ensemble, which started as an informal grouping of KEs alumni who were active in the arts.

By 2000, this KE alumni formed an extension of MSU-K.E., which is to become the K.E. Alumni Performers performing in the city of General Santos. The group’s trademark is the Tri-People Prayer where there is the combination of the Lumad, Muslim and Christian prayer into one fostering unity and peace in the area.

It all started in 2003 where a Mindanao Theater Festival was held in Gensan, titled Layag Socsargen. The efforts of the organizers, who are KEs alumnis, would paved the way to the creation of the Kalimudan Culture and Arts Group.

Kalimudan is a Maguindanaon word means to gather, a gathering, a commune, a group. Thus the beginning of a group that were united by one advocacy at that time, the promotions of culture and the use of the arts as expression for social change and development. Kalimudan first advocacy that would become its main mantra: ARTS for PEACE!
